Job Description
Description Lactation Consultant who performs client care activities and program design. Responds effectively to common client care issues. Works collaboratively with all members of the WIC/Health care team in the delivery of client care.
Qualifications Minimum Education
Bachelor's Degree Minimum Bachelor's degree with 8 college courses in Nutrition or Health Sciences (Required) And
Master's Degree (Preferred)

Minimum Work Experience
1 year Minimum of one year experience in lactation consulting, preferably in the community or an outpatient setting
Successful completion of the Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) competency-based training for WIC Breastfeeding Curriculum (levels 1-4) OR completion of a State-approved competency-based breastfeeding training that is consistent with the FNS Breastfeeding Curriculum 1-4 upon hire.

Minimum of one year of experience in counseling breastfeeding mother/infant dyads (Required) And

Required Skills/Knowledge
Excellent interpersonal relationship skills; excellent oral, written communication/documentation, and presentation skills
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, to multi-task and to prioritize workload accordingly

Required Licenses and Certifications
IBCLC required Upon Hire (Required)

Functional Accountabilities
Assessment and Planning
  • Gather physical and demographic data on patient/family.
  • Based on assessments, contribute to and develop individualized plan of care with client and family.
  • Work collaboratively with on-site primary care team /WIC team members at CNMC to determine breastfeeding initiation rate and exclusive breastfeeding
  • Develop a program in collaboration with WIC services for a breastfeeding service to Primary care/WIC clients. Follows the IBCLC Scope of Practice as issued by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners
Implements Plan of Care
  • Demonstrate competency in Lactation Consultant skills.
  • Follows DC Health's appropriate documentation tool for consultation.
  • Be part of a multidisciplinary team to address barriers to breastfeeding at Primary care/WIC and provide breast feeding in-service accordingly
  • Assist with the facilitation of pre natal visits to promote breastfeeding at Primary care/WIC and serve as a liaison between WIC and the community via advocacy and outreach with breast feeding promotion activities for National Breastfeeding Month and World Breastfeeding Week activities
  • Ability to provide lactation consults to staff and clients and provide breast pumps as needed
  • Provides timely follow-up services by telephone, home visits, WIC clinic visits, and/or hospital visits and refers to 24/7 lactation consultant telehealth service as needed
  • Work with our Public Relations department to promote breastfeeding in the community and hospital.
  • Provide orientation and ins-service for staff on breastfeeding at accredited OB-Gyn clinics/Children's primary care clinics and WIC
  • Mentors and supervises peer counselors
Evaluates Plan of Care
  • Integrate quality measures that will be able to demonstrate outcomes from the development of a community-based program.
  • Submit monthly contact report to DC Health and present bf rates/Enrollment during monthly staff meetings
Ensures that Patient/family understand plan of care and health status implications
  • Identify learning needs and contribute to teaching of client/family based on breast feeding care and support
  • Seek assistance to meet client's educational needs.
