We are seeking a Patent Technical Intern in our Salt Lake City office. In this role, you will assist the Patent Group attorneys with domestic patent applications, including technical research and analysis with respect to matters pending before the U.S. Patent Office. This is a great internship opportunity for a recent college graduate, junior, or senior majoring in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, or Electrical Engineering with an interest in patents and the law generally. Hands-on training regarding patent prosecution and related work will be provided.

Responsibilities include a range of ad-hoc requests, legal research projects, analyzing technical references, and drafting patent documentation (e.g., applications and responses to examination reports).

This internship includes a competitive hourly wage and is intended as a part-time Spring position (approximately 10-25 hours per week) with potential for a full-time Summer position. This position is hybrid and will require on-site attendance on a weekly basis.

Key Responsibilities Include:
- Research U.S. Patent Office requirements and regulations.
- Analyze references cited by the U.S. Patent Office during examination of U.S. patent applications.
- Respond to Office Actions from the U.S. Patent Office for patent applications.
- Review technical papers from inventors.
- Prepare patent applications based on information from inventors.
- Prepare patent claim charts.
- Conduct due diligence on patent families.
- Conduct due diligence on IP security agreements.
- Other research projects.
What we're looking for:
- Recent graduate, Junior, or Senior working towards a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, Electrical Engineering; recent graduates who are within 6 months of graduation are also eligible to apply.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Fervent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Problem solving prowess.
- Ability to work independently and take initiative when necessary.
- Experience in Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access and Word).
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
